These are some experiments in ambient / dub techno I've made since Figurine.
Like many of you, there was a brief period of time when I believed things were starting to get back to normal. I started going into the city for work, I started being out more. Since outbreaks happened at work, (I didn't get sick and was tested), I decided to work from home again for the time being.
Being thrust back into the isolation of the early pandemic bred an enormous level of anxiety and feelings of hopelessness that no amount of superfoods and video workouts could suffuse. This feeling of being disconnected and still brooding, dreaming, of something better on the horizon I believe was manifested in these experiments.
I was influenced by listening to a lot of Dub Techno particularly Deepchord, Echospace (Liumin album in particular), and Maurizio, Basic Channel. I was also influenced by a lot of the cold wave playlists I was finding on youtube. I hope to explore more of these darker sounds in future records. As always, in my imagination the RPG universe of shadowrun is a factor, as is my memories of what city life once was.
Technical notes:
I used the Elektron Digitakt again this time, like on the Babylon By Taxi EP, but this time I only used the MIDI tracks to trigger synthesizers and drum machines in Ableton. This allowed me to mix and add effects to my sounds in much greater detail. The sounds on this record are based on the 909 for drums, Prophet V, Farfisa (organ), and Solina (strings), along with some basic analog subtractive synth patches. The effects used include D-16 Redoptor Saturator, Audio Thing Outer Space, and Valhalla Reverb, and as always the Retrocolor RC-20 for vinyl, tape, and cassette emulation. I explored saturation, chorus, and delay in a way I haven't really done on other records.
